Well the thing about that is Tim wasn’t always grimdark. For most of his Robin career, he was dorky and punny and he fooled around in YJ, so he actually did the dynamic duo dynamic quite nicely. But death follows him EVERWHERE. Because Tim’s so good at what he does, he makes his own name in the DCU as Robin, rather than just being the happy-go-lucky boy Bruce put in green undies and pixie boots. And around that time, all of the Crisises start to happen. If he was like Dick was as Robin, everyone would have just forgotten about him during the shitstorm, but he held his own and kicked some serious ass. Eventually, when Kon and Bart came back and he made ammends with Steph, Tim started to turn around. By this point he’s 17 and already Red Robin, but he’s starts to become more like the perfect mix of Batman and Nightwing, with only the best qualities of both. He’s actually damn near close to being better than Bruce. And then the reboot… Ayway, with Damian… Well, Damian is a little shit, of course, but he’s a lovable little shit. Like you said, they fight because of who gets family rights, but initially Tim wanted to be friends, and Damian just punched him in the face. Damian also has this need to best Tim in the eyes of Bruce, so he starts fights a lot. Like, physical fights where Tim’s forced to beat the snot out of him in Crime Alley. But they develop a certain dynamic of their own. And fyi, Damian is the farthest thing from Robin!Dick, but he pulls the role off nicely as well.
